In the early 20th century the United States of America instated the "Buy American Act" which levied heavy taxes and import fees for any precious metal luxury good imported into the United States. As a result, Swiss watch manufacturers including Omega started a practice whereby dials, hour markers, hands and movements would be imported into the United States at which point in time the watches would be assembled and cased locally. This watch is a testament to that practice. On the inside of the caseback we see a very unique case makers mark - an arrow with a J in it - the symbol for a company by the name of Jonell. Furthering our theory, on the movement we see stamped 3 letters "OXG". After some digging I found that this code is US import code for Omega. This watch is being offered from my personal collection. It arrived to me originally with a poorly completed redone dial. I decided to have the dial professional refinished by a well reputable company to a higher standard. At that point in time the watch was also serviced. ABOUT THIS WATCH: MANUFACTURER: Omega MODEL: Dress Watch REFERENCE: 6553 SERIAL: 14xxxxxx YEAR: 1954 CASE: The 33mm solid 14kt yellow gold case is in excellent condition and remains unpolished. The watch was cased in the United States by a company named Jonell. DIAL: As previously stated, the watch arrived to me originally with a very poorly completed refinished dial. I decided to have the dial professionally refinished to a higher standard while preserving the watches original hands and hour markers. MOVEMENT: Omega manually wound caliber 420. The watch was serviced in 2022. The watch was placed on a timegrapher which illustrated that the watch is gaining 1 second per day and has a very healthy amplitude of 303.
