On offer is an historically important Omega Suveran “cigarette” watch (35mm) from 1945 in excellent condition, given its age and what it may have been through.A few things distinguish this specific model: * It was professionally serviced recently by a watchmaker who specializes in vintage Omega. * The dial has acquired a gentle military-green, almost tropical patina. * The hands and indices, including the sub-seconds indices, are in remarkable condition. Here’s some additional information about Suveran watches:Manufactured by Omega in the 1940’s, the Suveran was introduced with one goal in mind: to help the Swedish government break their dependency from Germany. That’s right, Omega sold the watches to Sweden, who then retailed them to their citizens, funding their own government. Not only have these pieces become collectible in the last 10 years because of their substantial size and beautiful syringe hands but because of that remarkable history, because they’re surviving artifacts of a European crisis. This particular watch is a Swedish market World War 2 military-style watch referred to as a cigarette watch. Swedish soldiers used to trade their Suveran watch for cigarette packs, which they got the name "cigarette watch." Suveran is also mainly made for Swedish citizens to support their government financially. Of course, only a limited quantity of the Suveran exists in today's market, most of which are with refinished dials or in deplorable condition. This one retains its original factory finish. Founded at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1848 by 23-year-old Louis Brandt who assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. He travelled throughout Europe selling his watches from Italy to Scandinavia by way of England, his chief market. After Louis Brandt's death in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar, troubled by irregular deliveries of questionable quality, abandoned the unsatisfactory assembly workshop system in favour of in-house manufacturing and total production control. Due to the greater supply of manpower, communications and energy in Bienne, the enterprise moved into a small factory in January 1880, then bought the entire building in December. Two years later the company moved into a converted spinning-factory in the Gurzelen district of Bienne, where headquarters are still situated today. Their first series-produced calibres, Labrador and Gurzelen, as well as, the famous Omega calibre of 1894, would ensure the brand's marketing success.
