Grand Seiko SBGF021 Gift to Jazz Drummer Elvin Jones This super cool SBGF021 holds the legendary 8J56 HAQ movement, whose accuracy is mind boggling. The dial has a tatami woven pattern that only appears in certain lights. It sports a screw in crown which increases the water resistance to 200m, not that you would want to wear this in the water due to the provenance! The case back engraving shows that the piece once belonged to legendary jazz drummer Elvin Jones. It was gifted to him on his 75th birthday in 2002 from Sakae Rhythm, a drum manufacturer for Yamaha. Jones is widely considered to be one of the best and most influential jazz drummers of all time. Best known for being part of John Coltrane's quartet from 1960-65, Jones was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995 and named Number 23 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time. The company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called "K. Hattori" (服部時計店 Hattori Tokeiten?) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan. Eleven years later, in 1892, he began to produce clocks under the name Seikosha (精工舎 Seikōsha?), meaning roughly "House of Exquisite Workmanship". According to Seiko's official company history, titled "A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko" (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning "exquisite" or "success" ("exquisite" is usually written 精巧 from Chinese jīngqiǎo, while the meaning "success" is usually written 成功 from Chinese chénggōng).

Seiko is perhaps best known for its wristwatches, all of which were at one time produced entirely in-house. This includes not only major items such as microgears, motors, hands, crystal oscillators, batteries, sensors, LCDs but also minor items such as the oils used in lubricating the watches and the luminous compounds used on the hands and the dials.
