While most people think of Grand Seiko or King Seiko when it comes to high-grade vintage Seiko, it was actually the Lord Marvel that debuted Seiko’s first 36,000 bph high-beat movement back in 1967, the caliber 5740C. At the time, this was only the second high-beat movement in the world, proving that Seiko could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Swiss. This example dates to August 1967 and showcases a crisp white dial with applied indices a layout that balances refinement with legibility. The dial is clean and symmetrical, paired with dauphine-style hands and a central seconds hand, giving it a timeless dress watch aesthetic that wears as fresh today as it did fifty years ago. The 37.5mm stainless steel case is slim at just 10mm, with sharp edges that remain well preserved. Inside, the manual-wind caliber 5740C beats away at 36,000 vibrations per hour with 23 jewels, offering both historical significance and reliable performance. Completing the watch is a black leather strap. The watch is in great shape for its age, with only a few minor scratches on the case and case back. The crystal is flawless, with clean bezel, clean dial and case. The watch has been serviced, so it’s keeping excellent time.
