Overview-
This is an omega speedmaster MK III, introduced in 1971, it was the first Speedmaster model to feature an automatic movement (self-winding). The caliber 1040, which was also the first serial chronograph movement to receive a chronometer rating. The Mark III features a unique barrel-shaped ("tonneau") stainless steel case. This design sets it apart from the more traditional round cases of other Speedmaster models. The watch comes with its original integrated stainless bracelet that seamlessly blends with the case, creating a cohesive and streamlined appearance. The bracelet can easily be changed out for a strap, and I will include the one pictured in the sale. The strap accentuates the beautiful grey / blue of the dial.
While the Mark III may not be as famous as the original Moonwatch, it is a significant part of Omega's history and the Speedmaster family. It served as a transitional model, introducing an automatic movement and modern design elements while advancing chronograph technology with a fully integrated movement hosting a central minutes counter and 24hr subdial.
Unlike later iterations of the speedmaster, the mk III was used as part of the 8-day Soyuz 24 mission in February 1977 to the Salyut 5 space station by Victor Gorbatko.
For those interested in more about this specific iteration of the dial and the Professional designation, you can search the calibre1040 website for interesting research on production numbers as dates.
Condition: This watch is in used condition, but the case and bracelet are well presented with minimal wear on the case based on its age. This is an original case that has not been polished. It retains the factory grain, in a circular pattern. This case came with both sun burst and circular grain finishes. The "professional" designation on the dial indicates that this is post 1972. I have seen more of these cases with the grain rather than the sunburst, so that is consistent. The bevels are sharp and present throughout. The transition to the case site still retain the correct vertical brushing.
I purchase the watch from Time Anagram in Japan in 2022. Time is a specialty dealer in vintage Omega. It was serviced before sale.
Includes: Watch, bracelet and strap pictured (I find the strap makes the watch easier to adjust, but I got small wrists)
Price is $2,400 - This includes FedEx Express insured shipping within the USA. Payment accepted is bank wire, Zelle, and PayPal G&S +3.5%.
