Description:
Seiko announced the Prospex SRQ031, Ltd. Ed. Chronograph in the fall of 2019 to pay tribute to the 1964 release of the original Crown Chronograph, Seiko's first-ever chronograph wristwatch.
Limited to a total of 1,000 pieces, the SRQ031 features caliber 8R48, a movement that was introduced in 2014 and is placed at the highest end of the Japanese firm's current production capacity.
This automatic movement has a column wheel and vertical clutch as well as Seiko’s proprietary three-pointed hammer and a heart-shaped cam that ensures a perfectly synchronized re-setting of the chronograph function. Thanks to this movement choice, as well as the presence of a box-shaped, vintage-style sapphire crystal, the watches make quite the impression in person and are substantial on the wrist.
While the crystal adds to the overall thickness, the watch doesn’t feel overly weighty while being worn. Other than the movement choice, Seiko has given each of the angular cases made of stainless steel an extensive Zaratsu polish – a finish typically reserved for Grand Seiko, although we're starting to see certain higher-end Seiko models receive the polish as well. Seiko has also placed an application of the brand's "Super Hard Coating" on the case as well. Of course, the always impressive level of detail that the brand is known for is apparent across the case and dial decoration of both watches.
