On offer here is this highly coveted, all-time vintage Omega classic reference 2077-4 chronograph powered by the famed manual wind caliber 33.3 CHRO movement. The 2077 began production during WWII and is an oversized water resistant, military-style chronograph with screwed back and round pushers. It measures an impressive 38mm in diameter and is a direct progenitor of the famed Speedmaster line. As far as I can tell, all these Omega 33.3 CHRO movements were made in a few limited runs in the 1940s and then cased up at different times, some quite a few years later than the movement serial would indicate. This example is from the 10.8 million batch (ca. 1944) but likely dates to 1950 or so, as denoted by not only the fourth series indicator in 2077-4 but also the style of the Arabic “12” & “6” and dagger markers dial. I believe that this is an older redial - perhaps 1960s-era based on the style of the OMEGA font? - and, as you can clearly see, it has more than a little aged vintage character to it, both of which are reflected in the asking price. Still, it’s quite charming on the wrist, with a super strong case, and if you happen to have an original dial that fits this case and caliber you’ll certainly be in clover. 😉
Overall, the watch is in Very Good well-worn vintage condition and the complex 33.3 CHRO movement has just come back from a full overhaul, so it’s ready to wear and enjoy, with all timekeeping and chronograph functions operating well.
The asking price for this fully serviced iconic Vintage Omega 2077-4 33.3 CHRO is $8,650 USD, including fully insured domestic shipping. U.S. deals preferred these days but I’ll certainly listen to international buyers (international shipping will be +$100). Bank wire/direct transfer only on this watch. Payment must be made in U.S. DOLLARS. The watch will ship upon full clearance of the funds, as well as any necessary bank vetting. CASE & CASEBACK: Oversized, robust all steel aviator-style case measures 38mm wide x 45mm long x around 12mm thick to the top of the crystal. The two-piece screwed case with pronounced downward sloping lugs is in Very Good vintage condition, not really showing any signs of polish but plenty of various nicks & minor dings commensurate with age and many years of regular use. The outer caseback is free of personalized engravings and likewise has its fair share of scratches and marks, so also Very Good vintage condition. The inner caseback shows extremely minimal corrosion, as does the case lip, and has all the Omega nomenclature of the period including, most importantly, the correct 2077–4 reference.
DIAL & HANDS: Despite the fact that my watchmaker didn’t really see the telltale signs on the back and edges when he removed the dial, to my eyes this is an older redial, if a well done one, likely dating from the 1960s based upon the block style of the OMEGA signature. It’s still clearly an original Omega dial base and features the correct later 2077 style of applied Omega symbol and Arabic “12” & “6”, with dagger markers for the rest. This dial obviously has a lot of miles on it and is only in Fair to Good condition on the TZ scale, with some paint loss to the outer tachymeter track and various spotting and marks throughout. That said, photos tend to overemphasize the flaws and it actually wears pretty nicely on the wrist, with plenty of vintage character, patina and wabi-sabi. The original syringe-style hands have been relumed but are in Excellent cosmetic condition, as are the chronograph sweep seconds and small sub-register counter hands.
MOVEMENT: The star of the show is the legendary Omega caliber 33.3 CHRO chronograph movement with a 10.8 million serial number, which dates it to circa 1944, perfectly in range for this rare series of large, water resistant chronos. Looking very bright and clean, this classic column wheel chrono movement has just returned from a full service so, timekeeping is accurate, power reserve is strong and chrono functions are all operating flawlessly. This is guaranteed to be the case at the time of shipping.
CROWN & PUSHERS: Omega-signed service crown (an original would be unsigned, I believe) but period correct chunky pushers in Very Good to Excellent cosmetic condition. The large crown winds and pulls out to the time-setting position, as it should. The top pusher stops and starts the chronograph and the bottom pusher resets all chrono registers precisely to zero, as designed. There is no hour register creep.
CRYSTAL: Domed acrylic crystal is very clean and clear, with minimal scratches/nicks and no cracks or chips - Excellent+ condition.
STRAP: This cool Omega chronograph comes on a suitably rugged handmade Italian leather strap in rust brown with matching stitching. This strap has a generic steel buckles, is pleasantly past the break-in phase and wears very comfortably. Although this strap is a 19mm, this classic oversized chrono actually has a 20mm lug width.
As a matter of policy, I make NO guarantees for the water resistance of this watch in any way, shape or form.
This rare Vintage Omega 2077-4 cal. 33.3 CHRO is offered with a 3-day inspection period from the date of receipt and may be returned for a full refund less any shipping costs incurred by the buyer. This refund is unconditional and once I get the watch back in exactly the same condition as it was sent to you, your money will be refunded. Once the 3 days are over the sale will be considered FINAL.
Thanks for looking,
T.
