[WTS] Seiko Aug. 1990 (7C17-8000) Snap Open Bezel Braille Watch, Japan Made
For sale is this vintage Seiko (7C17-8000) for the Visually Impaired, made in Japan in August of 1990. Seiko is always pushing boundaries and has been on a mission to make watches for everyone, proving so, with this beautiful watch made especially for the visually impaired. There was clearly a lot of thought put in to this design with its snap-open bezel that allows the user to touch the hands and dial to tell the time. The hands are strong so as to withstand touching where other watch hands would simply would bend or break. Perhaps this watch is not needed nowadays with the accessibility of smartwatches so it has become more of a collectors item. The dial is a white enamel dial, which not only gives it a creamy and thick appearance (as well as being an up-market process being that Rolex uses enamel dials on their Submariners), but the dial can resist corrosion and grime that may be on the fingers that touch it. The stainless steel indices are raised and smoothed to allow easy time-telling via touch and are welded into the dial so that it further prevents the build-up of grime that might otherwise build up. The indices are larger at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 to better distinguish the time. The simple but sturdy stainless steel pencil hands give the watch a timeless look. The case has a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces and the whole package is very reminiscent of the IWC Cal.89 in its design. There is no lip from the dial to the case so as to not get in the way of time-telling via touch. The flush look is pleasing and is another example of the attention to detail Seiko is known for. The bezel snaps open and shut with a satisfying click. The choice to discard the seconds hand adds to the elegance and might otherwise confuse being difficult to differentiate between a minute hand and a seconds hand. The 7-Jewel 7C17 is a robust movement that is also surprisingly pretty to look at in the sea of ugly cheap quartz movements of today. The watch design has been in production since 1966 when it was first introduced with an automatic movement and later changed to a quartz movement during the '80s (this model). Watch is in good condition considering its age and works perfectly. Brand new anti-allergenic supple black leather strap. Dimensions are (roughly): 35.3mm x 42.3mm x 11.2mm Lug Width 18mm Bought in Japan.
