[WTS] Seiko 1974 (or 1975) "09QZW" (0923-8020) Blue Textured Dial, JDM, Unique Triple Font Calendar Days, Japan-Made
For sale is this vintage Seiko "09QZW" (0923-8020), made in Japan roughly between 1974 and 1975. The "QZ" range were some of the first early quartz models only for the Japanese domestic market to come from Seiko along with the "QR" and "QT" ranges when quartz was all the rage being the new technology in horology. "QZ" models were even priced higher than the Grand Seiko's of the same time and being sold for the equivalent of roughly $1000 today, adjusted for inflation. The textured blue dial is just fantastic like a powdery ocean surface. The satin/matte finish of the dial allows the monolithic and complex, block markers to shine. The indices have so much detail in the complex design with the cut-out centre stripe, the top side that looks brushed but is actually very fine perpendicular lines and the high-polish sides & bevel that reflect light beautifully. The hands are also striking being polished but with a brushed centre, while the seconds hand is in white. The Seiko logo and single crystal quartz symbol are applied. The Suwa swirl symbol on the dial and the case back indicates the watch was designed and manufactured by the Suwa factory during its fierce rivalry with the Daini factory. The calibre 0923 movement is an over-engineered early quartz movement, very pretty compared to cheap modern quartz. This movement is especially special as it has a very unique feature that I have never come across before. It has the ability to allow the user to choose between TWO different fonts in English for the days of the week or in Japanese Kanji. Shown in the pictures towards the end. The blue font is slightly more stylised while the other is a thinner font in black except for Sunday, which is in red for all 3 choices. When the font is changed, the date also reverses, making changing the date and time quicker. The calibre 0923 has a stated accuracy of 15 seconds a month. The case is simple but effective with the original finishing still intact. Brushed on the top surface and polished sides. A couple of things to note however is that the case back is not original to the watch, it comes from another model released around the same time so the exact manufacture date cannot be determined, as the serial number on the case back is not correct to the watch. The crystal is also not original, as the original was a cut-glass style crystal, but the current crystal makes it easier to see the beautiful dial and is a very clear, good quality crystal. The bracelet is also not original but is a Japanese "Bambi" branded stainless steel JDM bracelet with adjustable links and micro adjustment holes that suits the watch better than the original bracelet in my opinion. Dimensions are: 36.1mm x 41.5mm x 11.1mm Lug Width 18mm Bought in Japan.
