This vintage IWC piece features the very limited production cal. 85 movement. This was IWC's second-ever automatic movement and their first with a central seconds hand. Production is estimated to be just 8,400 units across all models during the two years it was in production (1952-1954) before being updated to the caliber 852. Like all IWC automatic movements, the caliber 85 utilizes the innovative and efficient Pellaton winding system, which gives the watch great shock protection compared to other pieces from the era. The case is a very rare two piece design with long, widely set lugs. This design was not frequently used, especially in steel, and this example still has the very slight crease at the top of the lugs intact, which gives them some nice definition and visual interest. It is usually the first thing to go on polished examples. The dial shows some heavy patina but the printing is crisp, original, and intact and the hands and indices are both very good. There is also no physical damage such as flaking or chipping. Overall vibe on the pull-up leather strap is something Indy would wear. The movement is winding and seting smoothly and keeps great time. A shot of it on a friends timegrapher is included in the imgur album and shows high amplitude with no beat error. Measurements: 34mm wide (without crown), 44mm lug to lug, 11.7mm thick, with 20mm lugs. The long and wide lug measurements with the smaller case size give this a wide stance on the wrist that gives it a lot of presence.
