This is it, the Grand Seiko that put Grand Seiko on the western map. Yes, Seiko has been making GS watches since 1960, but this watch, the SBGM003 GMT — predecessor to the SBGM021 and grandfather to the current SBGM221 — made such a huge impact with worldwide watch enthusiasts that I believe it’s the direct catalyst for the popularity the brand enjoys today. I personally love these pre-2017 double signed models, especially with the medallion casebacks. They’re just a little more “inside baseball” than the hype machines out there today. And let’s be honest, Seiko doesn’t exactly put a modern, exhibition-worthy movement in the 003/021/221. The 9S56 is utilitarian in the old Seiko tradition, reliable, if not aesthetically pleasing. This example is a recently serviced by Grand Seiko, all original, matching serial numbers, full set. It includes: wood outer box, felt inner box, original Rating Certificate, Tokyo purchase guarantee/receipt, instruction manual, mechanical watch handbook (the illustrations are awesome!), and even a completely new, unopened/unworn authentic GS replacement strap, itself a $200 value. None of my watches are safe queens, they’re all worn and used for their intended purpose. I am describing the cosmetic condition of this watch as “good.” Therefore, while there are certainly no dents, dings, damage or scratches, there are hairlines and a scuff or two consistent with the watches age and use. I do not think the watch was serviced or polished prior to my acquisition of it >15 years ago, and it remained in its original, unpolished condition during my ownership. Even still, the legendary Grand Seiko polishing still gleams brightly on the wrist and none of the hairlines are apparent during normal everyday wear. Grand Seiko performed a routine service in 2023.
