Details

Case: Unpolished case retains sharp edges and original factory finish. Minor signs of light wear from use. Distance between lugs is 19mm. Case measures 40mm in diameter.

Dial / Insert: Excellent deep blue “Water 70m Resist” dial. Original white tritium lume on hour markers is fully intact, as is the lume on the minute and hour hands. When exposed to UV light the lume becomes uniformly activated as it should. “Pepsi” bezel insert is in excellent condition. Bright red chrono hand re-sets to 12:00.

Movement: Seiko caliber 6139B automatic. A complete movement service was performed in June 2022.

Crystal: Hardlex crystal shows some signs of wear.

Bracelet: “H” link stainless steel bracelet with signed clasp.

Accessories: Original Seiko presentation box

Notes: In the watch collecting community the blue-dialed 6139 is often referred to the “Blue Pogue” (in 1973, NASA astronaut Colonel William Pogue was photographed wearing his 6139-6005 while timing various maneuvers and engine burns), or the “Cevert” (in the early 1970s, Formula 1 legend Francois Cevert wore a 6139-009). One will see three dial variations in the 6139 series owing to the changes in U.S. regulations which sought to clarify imported watches labeled as “Water Proof” or “Water Resistant.” Hence, in the 6139 line one can see three periods of manufacture: Early (”Proof”), Middle (“Resist”) and Late (no text at 9:00).

The company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called "K. Hattori" (服部時計店 Hattori Tokeiten?) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan. Eleven years later, in 1892, he began to produce clocks under the name Seikosha (精工舎 Seikōsha?), meaning roughly "House of Exquisite Workmanship". According to Seiko's official company history, titled "A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko" (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning "exquisite" or "success" ("exquisite" is usually written 精巧 from Chinese jīngqiǎo, while the meaning "success" is usually written 成功 from Chinese chénggōng).

Seiko is perhaps best known for its wristwatches, all of which were at one time produced entirely in-house. This includes not only major items such as microgears, motors, hands, crystal oscillators, batteries, sensors, LCDs but also minor items such as the oils used in lubricating the watches and the luminous compounds used on the hands and the dials.
