1979 Seiko 6306-7001 "Turtle" – Serviced

It seems that I am now in possession of two Seiko 6306 turtles (I can't control my eBay impulses) and I am letting one go. Up for sale is a fully serviced, great condition, correct 6306-7001 "turtle" from 1979.

The watch was originally purchased from and serviced by well-known vintage Seiko dealer DC Vintage Watches in June 2024, providing an additional layer of confidence that the watch is correct and original.

The watch is in great shape for a 45 year old dive watch. There is plenty of information on the internet on these watches, but the 6306-7001 Japanese market only variant was made in much more limited quantities than the 6309 variants exported across the globe. The 6306 variant has an upgraded movement with an additional 4 jewels and hacking function as well as "kanji" Japanese dates on the date wheel.

Specific details below but please take a look at the photos for the most accurate condition report. The photo of the movement was from service, all other photos are my own.

Dial: the dial is excellent and unblemished with no signs of "rot" on the plot lumes or hands often seen on these watches from water ingress. The "water resist" writing retains its red/orange hue, most examples have faded to yellow from UV light over the years. Correct Kanji/English date wheel. The dial is definitely a highlight of this watch.

Bezel: correct bezel showing minimal signs of wear.

Case: honest vintage case with all case lines remaining sharp and no signs of machine polishing. Caseback inscription remains clear and legible.

Movement: original 6306A movement from 1979 - 21 jewels with hacking made for the Japanese market. Fully serviced by DC vintage watches in June 2024. The service included a pressure test, which passed at 5 bar. All functions work, as expected after a full service. Proof of service and pressure test will be provided with the watch.

Crown: screw-down original crown performs as designed.

Band: comes with the aftermarket Uncle Seiko GL831 strap shown in the photos, new unworn condition.

The company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called "K. Hattori" (服部時計店 Hattori Tokeiten?) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan. Eleven years later, in 1892, he began to produce clocks under the name Seikosha (精工舎 Seikōsha?), meaning roughly "House of Exquisite Workmanship". According to Seiko's official company history, titled "A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko" (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning "exquisite" or "success" ("exquisite" is usually written 精巧 from Chinese jīngqiǎo, while the meaning "success" is usually written 成功 from Chinese chénggōng).

Seiko is perhaps best known for its wristwatches, all of which were at one time produced entirely in-house. This includes not only major items such as microgears, motors, hands, crystal oscillators, batteries, sensors, LCDs but also minor items such as the oils used in lubricating the watches and the luminous compounds used on the hands and the dials.
