This is a period when IWC was quietly doing some of its most thoughtful work—focused on engineering, proportion, and restraint rather than trends. The watch features a clean white dial with Roman numeral hour markers, free of lume, giving it a crisp and timeless appearance. The typography is perfectly judged: the classic script IWC logo at 12 and “AUTOMATIC” at 6 sit lightly on the dial, allowing the numerals and hands to do the talking. It’s a design that feels deliberate and measured, with nothing out of place. Housed in a 35mm case, the watch wears larger than the dimensions suggest thanks to the thin bezel and expansive dial. The lugs are short, beveled, and elegant, keeping the watch refined on the wrist. The crown is signed with IWC’s fish symbol, indicating a water-resistant case—an uncommon and thoughtful detail for a dress watch of this era. Inside is the celebrated Caliber 854B, featuring Albert Pellaton’s proprietary automatic winding system. Efficient, robust, and beautifully engineered, the Pellaton system remains one of IWC’s most important technical contributions, with its DNA still present in modern IWC movements today. The movement also allows for practical date adjustment by moving the hands forward and backward, a clever feature even by today’s standards. The watch is in great condition showing minor hairline scratches on the case and the caseback fitting for its age. The crystal is clean, dial has slight hint of patina on the surpace.
