It is tanned with oak and birch barrels so the woody smokey smell is wonderful. Now a story...Bakers Russian Leather is an embodiment of the legendary and highly sought-after Russian Leather, meticulously reproduced through the lens of history. The endeavor began with an in-depth study of the only remaining 18th-century leather rolls that were discovered amidst the wreckage of the Metta Catharina, resting along the Devon and Cornwall coastal border. They embarked on a mission to revive the remarkable attributes of this leather, painstakingly recreating its distinctive color, intricate patterns, opulent thickness, inviting texture, pliable-yet-firm handling, alluring scent, and unparalleled durability. The project involved extensive research into the ancient tanning techniques and the naturally occurring materials that were once harnessed by the master craftsmen of Russia's storied past. Details: The strap shown in the picture is 20mm at the lug tapered to 16mm at the buckle and is of the standard size 115mm/ 75mm. The stitching is done in an Ecru coloured waxed linen thread. I use Zermatt leather for the lining which is sweat resistant (great in summer) and hypoallergenic. The Edges are painted with several layers to protect the leather. They are finished off with bees wax that is used to burnish the edges, giving a smooth silky finish.
