For your consideration: Look, it doesn’t get much better than this. If you’re the type of person who likes to have a bunch of asterisks on your watch, this piece will not disappoint. What do I mean by that? First consider the piece at face value: this is a 1971 Rolex 1601 with the classic pie pan small font dial. That means you’re looking at a stainless steel case, white gold bezel, and a solid link steel Rolex 555 jubilee bracelet which will fit well over 8” wrists. The case is in stunning condition, with a bezel that sparkles like a disco ball and lugs that could cut grass. The polished side of the case displays no flaws except stray fingerprints, as does the crown side. Unfortunately the movement fell victim to a recent service and is working smoothly and flawlessly. Setting the time feels buttery enough that if I were blindfolded I’d date the watch to the 2010s at least. And thats just the basic info. A trained eye will note that although the dial is stamped “T Swiss T”, there is no tritium lume to be found anywhere on the dial or the hands. This is because during the era of the 1601, Rolex faced restrictions and regulations on the export of tritium dials to Asian markets. Instead of waging what would have been a financially draining legal battle, Rolex decided to produce watches with no tritium lume (dubbed “No Lume” by clearly the most creative of horological nomenclators) to sell in the affected markets. So while the dial stamp was unchanged (continuing to read “T Swiss T”), the hand set and indices were produced with no luminous material, resulting in a limited run of watches with a incredible clean look.
