For sale today is a gorgeous Illinois Bunn Special pocket watch with original factory exhibition back. This is a size 16s railroad-grade watch from 1923. At 23 jewels, adjusted to temperature and 6 positions, this is the highest grade of Bunn Special that was offered by Illinois Watch Co. This is the "salesman sample", which is extremely rare. The purpose of the simplistic, branded case with exhibition back is so that it would be easy for salesmen to show off the gorgeous movement to potential buyers. After that, the customer would choose a case material and style and the jeweler would then assemble their custom movement/dial/case combo. Typically the cases they choose did NOT have exhibition backs, and generally you don't find Bunn Specials with an EB, except in these specific sample models. Two weeks ago, the watch underwent a partial servicing where the movement was disassembled and all of the pivots were polished to ensure smooth operation. The timing was then adjusted for accuracy. This top-grade 16s-size Model-11 movement boasts a number of impressive features. 23-rubies, adjusted to temperature and 6 positions. Double-roller. Gold wheels. Raised gold jewel settings. Jeweled "Motor Barrel". This is a "lever-set" movement. Again, 23 jewels is the most that Illinois offered, and most Bunn Specials actually have only 21 jewels. The incredible finishing of the movement also deserves mention. It is both intricate and elegant, as you can see in the pics. The case measures approximately 49mm in diameter and is made of "silveroid", a compound that is not unlike stainless steel. The front and back bezels are both engraved with "Illinois Watch Co.", a feature you can only find on the salesman sample models such as this one. The porcelain enamel dial is beautifully printed, and is in flawless condition. No chips, scratches, discoloring, or any other signs of age. Looks like it could have been made yesterday. The blued-steel hands are also flawless, and they are original to the watch. This is a fantastic watch! Beautiful, rare, and also in excellent condition.
