This watch is part of a 20-piece limited edition run, and it is no longer available in this colorway. If you have gotten this far, I probably don’t need to tell you about Theo Auffret and Spaceone. Like MAD Editions, Kurono Tokyo, Grøne, etc., this is the more affordable side project for a world-renowned watchmaker/visionary. In this piece, Auffret’s team gives us a unique case (spaceship) in an unusual material (carbon) with an ingenious modification to a workhorse movement (Soprod P024, with a jumping hour complication). The black carbon fiber is playful and multifaceted, the shape is distinctive, and the jumping hour worth the 60 minute wait (even though it isn’t instantaneous like a Franck Muller Crazy Hours or Vincent Calabrese!) This watch also has some wonderful subtleties that only come out on closer inspection. The time is told using three discs. While the hours and minutes are easily read, the seconds wheel is a lot of fun. The constantly spinning indices give dynamism to the watch’s cockpit/dial. The dial is also lumed, casting a lovely ambient glow in low light. The crown, the ship’s “engine”, has a great tactile sensation with well balanced tension.
