The “Gold Dot” SCVE008, is entirely true to its hue - not only the dial and dot but the second hand and leather strap also carry shades of gold. **The Origin.** Beyond their rarity and value, the Dots have a distinct charm that feels experimental - possibly hinting at their origin. Collections like the Dot series are the result of junior designers being given the opportunity to create low-stakes, small-batch releases for the Japanese Domestic Market. With Seiko’s strong culture of internal promotion, allowing designers to step above their paygrade for a project or two could be an ideal way to spot new talent. **The Theory.** In 2008, Seiko’s internal design competition had the theme of “creating watches inspired by Tokyo districts”. Junior designers are encouraged to submit their own designs, with the best ones possibly being turned in real watches. One shortlisted entry, the Shinagawa model ([number 6 in this album](https://imgur.com/a/8hUI2dQ)), immediately caught my eye. That’s some sort of prototype Dot Watch, isn’t it? Baton indices and hands, the circular case design with subtle lugs, and the colourful dot subdial. There’s no confirmation linking the 2008 Power of Design project to the SCVE Spirit collection, but I’m pretty sold on it. # Details: **The Condition**: In great condition overall.
