Good evening, WatchEx! First for tonight, an understated daily-wearer with Girard-Perregaux blood: the Jean Richard Highlands Automatic. I'll be honest: prior to acquiring this watch early this year, I wasn't aware of the brand. I also wasn't aware that it's quite literally a "budget" brand for GP under the Kering Group. What might seem like a simple field watch at first glance, is actually quite refined. A very legible cream dial is accented with sharp/shadowed/luminescent Arabic markers, and the date wheel adds a subtle vintage vibe with an older hand-written style font. It wears so, so nicely - it's just a smooth watch. The brushed finish is so clean, and the domed plexi crystal adds to the vintage flair with just a touch of depth on the face. The leather strap is extremely soft - honestly one of the most comfortable leather straps I've experienced. If you're thinking that this watch looks a bit like a Hamilton Khaki, there's good reason for that. Dr. Luigi Malacuso (of Girard-Perregaux) had immense respect for then-American Hamilton, calling them the "Patek Phillipe of the United States." He visited Hamilton in the state in the late-80's, and convinced Hamilton to expand on what would eventually become the Khaki series. He took this design back to Italy, made it his own with GP's fledgling brand DJR (now simplified to JeanRichard), and launched the Highlands series of watches. Cliches be damned, this is truly one of the best-built field watches I've had - especially around this price. It has classic 2000's flair, a movement reconfigured by the experts at GP/DJR, and it truly wears like a dream. These are becoming quite scarce - snag one while you can, and you'll understand why I'm so high on this watch.
